In the early hours of Thursday, July 31, 2025, W.F. Mason Jr., known simply as Bill to all who knew him, passed away peacefully with his daughter, Jessica, by his side. They spent his final hours together reading his favorite poems and listening to the music he loved. He was 79.
Born and raised in Â鶹´«Ã½¹ÙÍø, Virginia, Bill devoted his life to the community he called home. He graduated from Emory & Henry College then went on to earn his law degree from the University of Virginia in 1971.
Fresh out of law school, he worked as an attorney at Norfolk and Western, then created his own office, and for more than 50 years, practiced law in the Â鶹´«Ã½¹ÙÍø Valley, building a career marked by integrity, sharp insight, and meaningful relationships.
In addition to his legal work, Bill taught tax law at Ferrum College for several years and served on numerous local boards and government campaigns. He gave generously of his time and resources to causes throughout the region. Until his last day, Bill remained a practicing attorney, always available with guidance, perspective, or a quick phone call when it mattered.
Outside of work, his heart was at his farm in Franklin County. It was there, surrounded by woods and open fields, that he found real peace. He was in the middle of finalizing plans for a new cabin, a project his family plans to finish in his honor.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William F. and Elizabeth Mason; his son, Shaw; and the love of his life, Cherrie.
He is survived by his daughters, Jessica and Stacey; his sister, Betty; his grandson, Rufus; and Ben Vance, whom he loved as a son.
He was also deeply grateful for the care and friendship of Bonnie Kingery, Lisa Conner, and Chris Lorenz, whose presence brought him comfort in recent years.
Bill will be remembered for his intellect, his wit, his generosity, and the quiet steadiness he brought to every part of his life. His legacy lives on in the work he did, the people he supported, and the land he cherished.
A celebration of his life will be shared with family and friends at a later date. Condolences may be shared with his family by visiting .
