Jane Hilleary Burgess Kelly

Jane Hilleary Burgess Kelly passed away peacefully on August 4, 2025 in Winchester, Virginia at the age of 82. A native of Âé¶¹´«Ã½¹ÙÍø and life-long resident of the Âé¶¹´«Ã½¹ÙÍø Valley, Mrs. Kelly leaves behind a legacy of personal service to the Âé¶¹´«Ã½¹ÙÍø community and treasured memories with family and friends.
Born September 7, 1942 in Âé¶¹´«Ã½¹ÙÍø, Virginia as the eldest child of May Gardner Smith and Carter Lane Burgess, Mrs. Kelly led a life characterized by dignity, compassion to others though personal service and the importance of family. After attending Hollins College, she married James L. Wiley, Jr., with whom she raised her children in Âé¶¹´«Ã½¹ÙÍø. Upon her re-marriage to Timothy Allcott Kelly in 1991, she relocated to Salem, Virginia, to create a home for her blended family.
Throughout the years, Mrs. Kelly touched the lives of many through dedicated community service and devoted personal pursuits. She will be fondly remembered for her volunteer service to hospice and elderly members of the Âé¶¹´«Ã½¹ÙÍø community through St. John's Episcopal Church's community outreach programs. An avid and lifelong gardener, Mrs. Kelly extended her passion for flowers to ownership of Greenway Court Flowers, a successful floral design firm, St. John's Episcopal Church's Altar Guild and the Âé¶¹´«Ã½¹ÙÍø Valley Garden Club. Mrs. Kelly was also a member of the Âé¶¹´«Ã½¹ÙÍø Assembly, the Junior League of Âé¶¹´«Ã½¹ÙÍø Valley, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Colonial Dames of America. Her absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Mrs. Kelly is survived by her children, James Carter Wiley, Dr. Mary Callaway Wiley and William Dawson Wiley, her step-children Whitwell Coxe Kelly, Caroline Allcott Kelly and Anna Beebe Sachs, her grandchildren, James Langhorne Wiley, III, William Clarke Wiley, Stewart Burgess Wiley, Dawson Montgomery Wiley, Rebekah Allcott Kelly, Thomas Wirsing Kelly, and Oliver Henry Sachs, her siblings, Nan Burgess Keegan, Mary Burgess McTighe, Sue Gardner Burgess, Elizabeth Burgess Smith, and Carter Lane Burgess, Jr., and leaves behind lifelong friends, Emma and Carolyn Woods. Mrs. Kelly was preceded in death by her grandparents, Robert Hall Smith and Mary Wysor Smith, and Joseph Burgess and Susie Repass Burgess, her parents, Carter Lane Burgess and May Gardner Smith Burgess, her husband, Timothy Allcott Kelly, and her grandson, Hugh Robert Callaway Wiley.
The family extends their sincere gratitude for the expressions of sympathy and support received during this difficult period and will receive visitors at The Stone House, at 914 13th Street, SW in Âé¶¹´«Ã½¹ÙÍø, Virginia on the evening of Thursday, August 14, 2025 at 6:30 pm. A Memorial Service will be held on August 15, 2025 at 10:30 am, at St. John's Episcopal Church at 1 Mountain Avenue in Âé¶¹´«Ã½¹ÙÍø, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church - "Community Outreach" whose programs were held dear by Mrs. Kelly.
