DANVILLE — A suspect has been arrested in the fatal shooting of a Franklin County High School teacher and basketball coach in Gretna Sunday night.
Officers were dispatched to a reported shooting at about 9:20 p.m. at 1344 W. Gretna Road, according to a news release from the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office.
Arriving officers found 46-year-old Tony Demond Gill dead, and a suspect, 52-year-old James Richard Mattox, was arrested at the scene, according to the news release.
Gill and Mattox knew each other, according to the news release. The victim has been transported to the medical examiner’s office.
Gill was a special education teacher at Franklin County High School, where he was also head coach of the girls’ basketball team.

Franklin County High School Principal Reyhan Deskins extended “the deepest condolences to his family, friends, scholars and all who were touched by his life.â€

His passion for teaching and coaching was matched only by his dedication to the growth and well-being of every scholar he encountered. Officers from the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, Gretna Police Department and the Virginia state Police responded to the incident.
Investigators continue to identify and interview all witnesses.
Mattox has been charged with murder and use of a firearm in commission of a felony. He is being held without bond.

A bond hearing has been scheduled for 10 a.m. Aug. 19 in Pittsylvania County General District Court.
