CHARLOTTESVILLE — Details of new Virginia baseball coach Chris Pollard’s deal reveal plenty about the Cavaliers’ commitment to Pollard and their desire to keep him in Charlottesville.
According to the offer sheet signed by Pollard and athletic director Carla Williams, and then obtained by The Daily Progress on Tuesday via a Freedom of Information Act request, Pollard’s contract with UVa is a seven-year agreement that’ll run through June 30, 2032.
His total annual compensation is $1.2 million. He’ll make a $300,000 base salary with supplemental income of $500,000 and licensing compensation of $400,000.
Pollard was hired earlier this month and introduced during a press conference last Wednesday, signaling a new era for the Hoos after former longtime coach Brian O’Connor departed to take the same job at Mississippi State on June 1.
O’Connor was making $1.4 million at UVa, but his buyout to leave UVa was only $500,000.
Pollard’s buyout, if he decided to leave according to the offer sheet, is $2 million in the first four years of his contract and $1.5 million after July 1, 2029.
The offer sheet Pollard signed also includes an assistant-coaching salary pool of $750,000 and a support staff salary pool of $181,000.
Pollard will have an operating budget of $650,000.
Last week, Williams said UVa will fund 25 scholarships for baseball moving forward and that Pollard will, “have the flexibility to go beyond that if he needs to.â€
Pollard said then that Virginia’s resources for baseball are, “positioned amongst the very best in the ACC, and I don’t know if I would’ve been comfortable taking the job if it hadn’t been.â€
He also has plenty of bonuses in his deal, which are as followed:
• ACC championship (defined by No. 1-seed in conference tournament and/or tournament champ): $3,000 each
