LOS ANGELES — Emma Lemley pitched a three-hitter Friday to lead the second-seeded and 15th-ranked Virginia Tech softball team to a 5-1 win over third-seeded San Diego State on the first night of an NCAA Division I regional.
Lemley struck out six and walked none.
The Hokies (40-12-1) will play at 5 p.m. (Eastern time) Saturday in the winners’ bracket final of the four-team, double-elimination regional.
Addy Greene had three hits and one RBI for Virginia Tech.
Tech banged out 12 hits off the Aztecs (31-19).
SOFTBALL
UVa 7, Miami of Ohio 0
Jade Hylton had three hits, including a two-run homer, and three RBIs to help the second-seeded Cavaliers (33-18) beat 24th-ranked and third-seeded Miami of Ohio (48-8) on the first day of an NCAA Division I regional Friday in Knoxville, Tenn.

UVa will play Tennessee in the winners’ bracket final at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Eden Bigham pitched a two-hitter for UVa, striking out 10 and walking three.
Âé¶¹´«Ã½¹ÙÍø wins twice
The Maroons (32-15) won two elimination games Friday on the second day of an NCAA Division III regional in Bethlehem, Penn.
Second-seeded Âé¶¹´«Ã½¹ÙÍø, which is 2-1 in the four-team, double-elimination regional, will meet Muskingum in Saturday’s finals.
The Maroons beat fourth-seeded Penn College 8-0 in five innings in their first game of the day. Grace Clary threw a two-hitter. Madison Courts had two hits and four RBIs.
Âé¶¹´«Ã½¹ÙÍø beat top-seeded and host Moravian 3-1 in the losers’ bracket final. Maggie McCray threw a four-hitter.
MEN’S GOLF
Zhang finishes 5th
Blacksburg graduate David Zhang of Carnegie Mellon finished fifth in the NCAA Division III championships Friday in Boulder City, Nev.
Zhang shot a 7-under 281 in the four-day tournament.
Washington and Lee’s Jonathan McEwen tied for 11th at 4-under 284.
W&L tied for sixth in the team battle with a 1-under 1,151.
Methodist won the team title at 21-under 1,131. Defending champ Carnegie Mellon finished one stroke back.
BASEBALL
VMI splits doubleheader
The host Keydets (27-28, 7-14 SoCon) split a doubleheader with Western Carolina (28-24, 13-8) on Friday, losing the first game 16-6 but winning the second game 9-8.
This year’s VMI team has tied for the fifth-most wins in school history.
Ty Swaim belted a solo, walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth in Game 2. He finished with three hits.
Justin Starke picked up his 273rd hit, breaking the VMI career record.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Texas A&M 4, UVa 1
The 13th-seeded and 13th-ranked Aggies (26-7) beat the fifth-seeded and sixth-ranked Cavaliers (25-5) in an NCAA quarterfinal Friday in Oklahoma.
MEN’S TENNIS
Wake Forest 4, UVa 1
The sixth-seeded and sixth-ranked Demon Deacons (31-6) earned an NCAA quarterfinal win over two-time defending NCAA champ UVa (25-6) in Oklahoma on Thursday night.
UVa standout Chris Rodesch missed the match with an illness.
Third-seeded and second-ranked UVa lost an outdoor match for the first time since the 2021 NCAA Sweet 16.
