Virginia Tech coach Brent Pry and offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen discuss the backup quarterback battle between Pop Watson and Dylan Wittke after Saturday's spring game at Lane Stadium.
Virginia Tech solidified the interior of its defensive line over the winter by bringing in three defensive tackles from the transfer portal and signing two promising high school linemen.
The additions didn’t stop there for the upcoming season.
Former Alabama defensive lineman Khurtiss Perry announced on social media Tuesday night that he is transferring to Virginia Tech.

“He’s a hybrid. … He reminds me of a kid we had at Penn State named Kevin Givens, who’s still playing for the 49ers. 6-2, 285, but explosive,†Hokies coach Brent Pry told David Teel of the Richmond Times-Dispatch on Tuesday at the ACC spring meetings. “This kid’s Alabama high school film is impressive. And I think he weighed like 268 when he came to our place. Maybe 270. So I think he’ll be plenty big enough. He’s got three years left.â€
Perry’s addition bolsters the interior of the Hokies’ defensive line that was upgraded over the winter. Tech brought in All-ACC selection Aeneas Peebles from Duke, and the graduate student established himself as one of the unit’s best players by being named the defensive MVP for the spring.
Kelvin Gilliam Jr. from Oklahoma and Kemari Copeland from Iowa Western Community College both were mid-year enrollees who worked with the first- and second-string units during the spring.
Perry will push for playing time in a rotation that also features Josh Fuga and Wilfried Pene.

The 6-foot-2, 265-pound Perry was a four-star prospect out of Pike Road High School in Alabama. He was the nation’s No. 54 overall prospect for his class, according to the 247Sports composite ranking, and his overall recruiting ranking would make him the 10th-highest prospect to join the Tech roster.
Perry did not play in 2022 and only appeared in the season opener against Middle Tennessee in the Crimson Tide’s run to the College Football Playoffs last season.
He has three seasons of eligibility remaining.
Perry made official visits to Tech, Indiana and Louisville, and his agent told ESPN’s Pete Thamel that Perry had a visit scheduled for Wisconsin.
