High school football players across the region showcased their skills Friday night in the form of four- and even five-touchdown performances, racking up yards and carrying their teams to victory.
Week 2's player of the week candidates feature a crop of new contenders who did just that. Quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers alike who made electrifying plays to the raucous applause of their fans.
Here's a breakdown of the six candidates. Vote for the player of the week below. Voting closes at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Carter Calfee, Craig County
The senior running back was both an offensive backfield and special teams presence in the Rockets' 56-0 win over Bland County in Rocky Gap. Calfee rushed for 150 yards on just eight carries, an average of over 18 yards per carry, and scored two touchdowns. He also returned not one but two punts to the end zone, returns of 58 and 63 yards, to record a four-touchdown evening.
A candidate for the second straight week, the senior quarterback earned a second straight five-touchdown performance as the Highlanders pummeled Liberty 56-0. He completed 9 of 14 passes for 140 yards with two touchdowns, and ran for 130 yards on 10 carries with another three scores, finishing with 270 yards of offense.
Nathan Glass, Parry McCluer
In Buena Vista, the senior signal-caller had himself a night with a five-touchdown performance to lead the Fighting Blues to a 46-12 win over Page County. Glass threw four touchdown passes, finishing 9-of-15 for 196 yards, and ran in another as part of a seven-carry, 80-yard rushing performance.
Cameron Hairston-Taylor, Patrick Henry
The senior wide receiver hauled in both of the Patriots' touchdowns in a 13-10 win over E.C. Glass in Lynchburg. Hairston-Taylor caught six passes for 145 yards, recording his second straight 100-yard, two-touchdown performance.
Jalen Miller, Giles
The senior running back was a workhorse for the Spartans' single-wing in their 34-21 surprise win over Radford. Miller rushed for 206 yards on a heavy dose of 34 carries and scored four touchdowns.Â
Zhiy Steelman, William Fleming
The sophomore running back got the Colonels back on track with a 173-yard, four-touchdown outing in a 49-0 win over Albemarle. He tallied 10 carries, averaging 17.3 yards per carry.
